PASCO — Wa-Hi opened the season by finishing seventh in a field of 15 schools here Monday at the Pasco Invitational boys golf tournament at Sun Willows.
Richland took home the team title with a 302 score, finishing two shots in front of Hanford. Moses Lake was a distant third at 319, followed by Mount Spokane 321, Southridge 323, Eastmont 337 and Wa-Hi 345.
Wenatchee finished a stroke behind the Blue Devils in eighth place with a 346 count, followed by Kamiakin 359, West Valley-Yakima 362, Othello 375, Chiawana 378, Eisenhower 382 and Kennewick 387. Pasco, the host school, didn’t enter a complete team.
Eric Dahl of Hanford claimed medalist honors with a 3-under-par 69 on the par-72 layout. Nick Thurston of Mount Spokane shot 71 and was the only other player in the field to break par.
Dean Atkinson led the way for Wa-Hi with an 83. Nick Atwood was right behind him with an 84. Nate Turner shot 87 and Konor Clark chalked up a 91 for Wa-Hi’s other two counting scores. Troy Aguilar carded a non-counting 101.
“We expect better scores, especially from Dean (Atkinson) and Nick (Atwood),” Wa-Hi coach Jim Smith said. “They are both state qualifiers from last year and have been varsity golfers for four years.
“The interesting thing,” Smith added, “was that when the kids got on the van to head home, they all immediately said, ‘I need to work on this or this.’ They had identified what they did wrong, and that’s going to make practice a lot easier.”
Playing conditions for this early in the season were nearly perfect, Smith said.
“It was probably in the low to mid-50s, hardly any wind and sunshine all day,” he said. “No excuses there.”
The Blue Devils won’t play again until March 15 when they return to the Tri-Cities to compete in the Kennewick Invitational at the Tri-City Country Club.
