Elzie Surles died on Feb. 27, 2013, at his home in College Place.
Elzie was born in Pocahontas, Ark., on Nov. 11, 1937, to Otho and Margie Mae Surles.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and one brother, Charles Edward Surles. He is survived by his wife, Dawna; three brothers, Jerry Surles, Thomas Surles and Gary Surles; a sister, Donna Street. He was the father of a combined family of eight, four daughters, four sons, 12 grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
Mr. Surles served in the Navy during the Vietnam War, had a master degree in theology and was an ordained minister. While living in Walla Walla he was employed at the Washington State Penitentiary as a unit supervisor and counselor. He came to Walla Walla on the “Riot Squad” from Shelton during the late 1970s.
A memorial service will be held Friday, March 8, 2013, at the Country Estates Club House at 1 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Providence St. Mary Regional Cancer Center through the Herring Groseclose Funeral Home, 315 W.
