FOREST GROVE, ORE — Before the Whitman men’s tennis team can test themselves against six nationally ranked teams in Santa Cruz, California and Hawaii, they faced a Northwest Conference match here Friday against last year’s second-place Pacific Boxers.

The Missionaries remained perfect in NWC matches, 7-0, with an 8-1 win over the Boxers.

The 13th-ranked Missionaries got wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. At No. 2 doubles, junior Andrew La Cava and sophomore Colton Malesovas posted an 8-1 victory over Pacific’s Lorne Bulling and Brian Kyaw. At No. 3 doubles, Steven Roston and Sam Sadeghi broke free from a 4-4 deadlock to beat Alen Suklje and Kolin Wong 8-4.

The Boxer tandem of Troy Zuroske and Giancarlo Battaglia remained undefeated with an 8-6 win over Whitman’s Matt Tesmond and Andy Riggs. The Boxer pair broke twice and led 7-4, but Tesmond and Riggs responded, saved a match point, and broke to get within 7-6. Zuroske unleashed two aces and the Boxers had their only win of the day with an 8-6 victory.

Whitman went on to dominate the singles play as Pacific was blanked 6-0. At No. 6 singles, Junior Will Huskey took his match 6-0, 6-1. At No. 3, Sadeghi took an early break against Brandon Schlack, but surrendered it and had to serve to stay in the set at 4-5. Sadeghi rattled off three straight games, and proceeded to cruise to a 7-5 6-2 win. Once again, Riggs provided the clinching fifth point by winning 6-2, 6-1. Lefty Steven Roston won in straight sets, 6-1 6-4. La Cava had the most impressive singles showing of the day at No. 2 singles where he handed Battaglia his first conference loss of the year by a 6-3, 6-1 count.

Playing in the top slot, Malesovas dropped the first set 6-4 to Zuroske. Malesovas responded in the second set by taking an early lead and holding on for a 6-4 win. With the team match decided, the match went to a 10-point tiebreaker, where Malesovas held leads of 4-2 and 8-3 before holding on for a 10-6 victory.
