Aletha “Darlene” Lawson was born in Cambridge, Idaho, on Oct. 7, 1926, to W. Harold and Dorris F. (Parsons) Downs, and died in Walla Walla on Feb. 11, 2013.
She attended elementary and secondary school in Idaho, and later graduated with an M.A. in education from Walla Walla College, (now University).
Mrs. Lawson taught 33 years of grades 1-2, from Stateline SDA School to Wenatchee, Las Vegas and Madras, Ore., retiring in 1995 from Havi, Hawaii. She enjoyed birding, gardening, hiking (once climbing 14,395-foot Mt. Whitney in California), horseback riding, and oil and watercolor painting.
Darlene is survived by her husband, Clifford; daughters, Sheila, Barbara and LaJean; and son, Kenneth. Also surviving are her brother, Harold and his wife Alta (Riffle) Downs; and sister, Jacque (Downs) Goodhew and her husband Larry Sr.; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; cousins; one nephew; three nieces; and many friends from years of teaching.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, March 16, 2013, at Walla Walla City SDA Church, 2133 S. Howard St. Donations may be made to the children’s programming of: 3ABN, P.O. Box 220, West Frankfort, IL 62896; or 618-627-4651.
