WALLA WALLA — Walla Walla High School hosted the Blue Devil Invite Saturday at Martin Field in the initial competition of the 2013 track and field season.

Moses Lake, Pasco, and Chiawana joined the Blue Devils in kicking off the spring season in non-scoring meet action.

“It was a good showing,” Wa-Hi track coach Eric Hisaw said. “Nothing to get too excited about as it is awfully early, but I was pleased with the way the kids handled the meet. There are always more distractions at home, and for the first meet, they handled the distractions, and were ready to go when it was their turn.”

The Blue Devils won 10-of-15 boys events.

Ethan Gardner, in his first meet, won the 100 meters in 11.55 seconds. Jonah Hoe took the 200 in 23.24. Andrew Miller ran to first in the 800 in 2:13.47 and Ben Wolpert took the 1600 in 4:34.00. Rob Thonney captured both hurdles, winning the 110 in 17.84 and the 300 in 44.66.

On the field side, Logan Reardon was a double winner as he took the shot with a 45-feet-9 heave and won the javelin with a 156-05 throw. Alexander Pickel went 6-00 to win the high jump. Peter Sirmon outdistanced the field in the pole vault with a vault of 13-06.

“We are decent on the boys side,” Hisaw said. “For his first meet of his life, I was very impressed with Gardner’s performance.”

On the girls side, the Blue Devils won 4-of-7 field events. Hannah Burns won the shot put with a 29-06 toss. Jessie Shives threw the discus 89-09 for first. Madison Doepker had a 100-05 javelin throw to win. Ashley Cornia leaped 34-05 to capture the triple jump.

On the track side, Chiawana’s Alexis Stephenson won both the 100 (13.44) and the 200 (27.54). The Blue Devils got a 5:50.06 run from Catherine Feistner to take first in the 1600.

“The girls did pretty good,” Hisaw said. “We are strong in the field. Maddie (Doepker) for her first meet, had a great javelin throw that is encouraging.”

Wa-Hi travels to Lewiston for the Lewiston Invite Saturday.

“We did a solid job,” Hisaw said. “It’s good to see the new kids have a good first meet and gain confidence. Lewiston, with 12 teams there, will be a good eye-opener for us. We’re going to try to win that baby.”
