Whitman, PLU split NWC twin bill

WALLA WALLA — Pacific Lutheran gave pitcher Max Beatty some late-inning support to win the first game, but Whitman grabbed the early lead in the nightcap and refused to give it up here Saturday as the teams split a Northwest Conference baseball doubleheader at Borleske Stadium.

As a result of the split, the Lutes are now 10-5 overall and 3-2 in the Northwest Conference. Whitman is 6-8 overall and 2-3 in the conference.

In the opener, Beatty allowed one run, one hit, and struck out 10 in his seven innings of work.

But Whitman took a 1-0 lead into the seventh thanks to a solo second-inning home run off the bat of Cameron Young.

Dakota Matherly, on the hill for the Missionaries, made that run stand up, as he limited the Lutes to just five hits while walking three and striking out three through six innings.

PLU finally broke loose against Whitman relievers Will Thompson and Tyler Grisdale.

The Lutes tallied four runs on a hit batter, a walk and just two hits, with the big blow being Carson McCord’s bases-loaded triple. McCord scored the fourth run on a passed ball.

The Lutes tacked on five runs in the eighth inning, thanks in part to a couple of Whitman miscues.

Whitman, behind a two-run double from Aaron Cohen rallied for four runs in the bottom of the ninth, but it wasn’t enough as the Lutes hung on to take game one, 9-5.

In the night cap, the Missionaries scored three times in the first to grab a 3-0 lead which they never relinquished.

Whitman took advantage of two PLU errors and a double from Ozzy Braff and a RBI single by Young to grab the 3-0 advantage.

Spencer Hobson made the first inning stand up as he went six innings on the mound for Whitman and limited the Lutes to two hits and one run as the Missionaries led 5-1 after six.

The Lutes cut the lead to 5-3 going to the home eighth, but Whitman’s Kyle Moyes answered with his second home run of the game and the Missionaries held on for a 6-4 win.

The teams conclude their three-game NWC series at noon today with a single nine-inning game.
