Warriors suffer softball sweep by Cougs

WALLA WALLA — What began badly finished the same Sunday as Clackamas pummelled Walla Walla 17-3 and 16-2 in a non-league community college softball doubleheader at Warriors Field.

The visiting Cougars struck for nine runs in the top of the first inning of the first game, and they plated nine more in the final inning of the nightcap, outhitting the Warriors 31-10 and slugging four home runs over the course of two five-inning contests.

Walla Walla’s double drubbing came 24 hours after Mount Hood had inflicted similar damage on Saturday, sweeping the Warriors 14-2 and 14-3. The lost weekend dropped WWCC’s season record to 2-6.

It was a nice bounce back for Clackamas, which suffered 4-3 and 7-4 losses at Columbia Basin on Saturday. By sweeping the Warriors, the Cougars climbed back above the .500 mark with a 4-3 record.

Nicole Lehman, Kayla Stevens and Kiara Vasquez pounded out home runs in Sunday’s first game for Clackamas. Stevens also singled twice and drove in four runs in the game while Vasquez had a four-RBI game as well. Lehman knocked in three runs.

Megan Malvick delivered the only long ball in the second game. She had three hits in the game, scored three times and picked up two RBIs.

Rashaun Sells stroked four singles and scored four times to lead Clackamas’ 16-hit assault.

Sam Robillard had two of WWCC’s five hits in the first game and Kate Hawk had two Warriors hits in the nightcap. Marisa Gonzalez hit safely once in each game for WWCC.

Walla Walla will try to rebound this weekend when it plays host to two more doubleheaders. Southwest Oregon will be in town Saturday for a noon twin bill and Everett will arrive Sunday for an 11 a.m. pair.
