UMATILLA — McLoughlin High School opened its baseball season with a bang Monday, defeating Class 3A Umatilla, 14-1, in a non-league single game.
Pitchers Dylan Schuler, Chase Copenhaver and Jordan Leinbach combined to throw a no-hitter (Umatilla scored on an error) and the Pioneers racked up 12 hits while benefitting from six Viking errors.
“The pitchers did a great job considering it was their first game out,” Mac-Hi coach Mike Garcia said. “Our hitters did an OK job, I guess. Maybe I’m being a little selfish — we had 12 hits — but we had seven strikeouts to their six, so that’s something we can improve on.”
Sophomore outfielder Jeffrey Jones led the Pioneers with four hits on the day, including a double, as the leadoff batter.
“He (Jones) had a great day,” Garcia said. “He’s our only sophomore and the things that he was able to do the first day out was very good. I’m happy for Jeffrey and hopefully this is something that he can gain from as well.”
Chase Copenhaver and Tavis Hodgen each had two hits, while Schuler, Derek Richwine, Leinbach and Hunter Yensen all contributed hits.
“All in all it was a good trip,” Garcia said. “I’d like to see us keep improving and get better from here out.”
Mac-Hi visits Madras for a single game Friday at 4 p.m. and travels to Portland Saturday for a noon doubleheader against Estacada.
