MILTON-FREEWATER — Pendleton handed McLoughlin High a season-opening softball loss here Tuesday, 7-0.
“I thought Pendleton did a great job last night at the plate and on defense,” Pioneers coach Nicole Christian said. “We struggled at the plate, and when we did hit the ball it seemed like it went right to them.”
Buckaroo pitcher Marrisa Jones struck out 10 Mac-Hi batters while giving up just three hits.
Colette Robert allowed 10 hits in the circle for the Pioneers.
“Colette did well on the mound despite a groin injury that we hope will be completely healed by our next game on the 22nd,” Christian said. “This was a great game to show where we are at and what we need to work on. Last year we came out of the gates super fast and beat up on Pendleton early, and now the roles were reversed.
“This year we have new faces up on varsity, new positions to learn, and a lot of things we need to address before our long spring break. I feel the next time we see them, it will be a completely different game. It’s the first game of the season, and there are a lot of nerves and emotions coming off a tough loss in the playoffs.
“We’re looking forward to adjusting after our loss last night, and stepping it up at practice and picking up the intensity to get us ready for the next game.”
Mac-Hi next hits the road to play at Central in Independence, Ore., on March 22.
