WALLA WALLA — Pioneer Middle School will be the site of this year’s state competition of the Odyssey of the Mind international educational program.
The event is being held Saturday starting at 9 a.m., and will conclude about noon following awards presentations. The event is open to the public, and will feature Andrae’s Kitchen offering breakfast and lunch on site.
A team of Walla Walla students competed in its first Odyssey of the Mind competition last year at Garibaldi, Ore. A school from Garibaldi, as well as teams from Spokane will be in town Saturday for the competition. Teams from Seattle have also qualified to compete but will not travel across the state due to weather, an event coordinator said.
Odyssey of the Mind challenges students to work as teams, developing team-building skills in the process. Students also tackle problem-solving with creativity and finding new ways to meet challenges. Problem solving can range from building mechanical devices, to interpreting literary classics. Students can compete on the local, state, and international level. The program is open to students from kindergarten through college. Thousands of teams from throughout the U.S. and from about 25 other countries participate in Odyssey of the Mind.
