WALLA WALLA — Walla Walla High School’s boys tennis team overcame first-match jitters to hand Kennewick a 5-2 Mid-Columbia Conference defeat at the Wa-Hi courts Tuesday.
“We’re really excited about it,” new Blue Devil coach Brian Eggart said. “I think there was a lot of nervous energy with it our first match. But they came through really well. I was very pleased at their effort. When we swept doubles I was very excited.”
Ruslan Kuznetsov picked up a victory over Chad McKenzie in a three-set tiebreaker.
“I was proud of his mental effort,” Eggart said.
Another singles victory was won by Connor Christensen.
The Wa-Hi doubles teams swept the Lions, with Nicholas Fuller and Lane Dawes, Douglas Rowley and Parker Toon, and Micah Rambo and Cole Woelfle earning victories.
“Even our two losses, I was was very pleased with their effort,” Eggart said of Zach Anderson and Andrew Bateman. “Both dropped their first set, but fought and fought to second-set wins. They both competed hard in the second set, which I was proud of as well.”
Wa-Hi heads to Richland Thursday.
