PRESCOTT — Waitsburg-Prescott rallied from a 5-3 deficit to plate eight sixth-inning runs and win a non-league baseball game from Weston-McEwen, 11-5, here Tuesday.
The TigerScots scored four runs in the opening inning, and another in the second, behind five hits to jump to a 5-0 lead.
W-P pulled closer with a run in the third and two in the fourth, before exploding in the sixth. The sixth-inning rally was sparked by Dalton Estes and Chance Leroue, who each had key hits to drive in runs — Leroue’s a two-run home run to give W-P the lead.
“Our timing at the plate was off in the early inngs,” W-P coach Dustin Snedigar said. “But I was pleased we adjusted and instead of rolling over pitches or popping out we started hitting line drives.
“Also, Talen Larsen only allowed one hit through four inngings (on the mound),” he said. “He had great command and kept them off balanced.”
Calvin Thacker had two of the TigerScots’ seven hits in the game.
“We competed well and played well up until the fifth inning,” W-M coach T.J. Haguewood said. “There were times we made errors, but then we made pitches and plays to get out of those errors. Our communication on defense hurt us.
“We knew Waitsburg was a great team coming in, and they showed why,” he said. “They hit the ball well.
“Overall, I was pretty pleased. If we look like this in 10 games I’ll be frustrated, but it’s our third game and we’re doing a lot of good things. It’s what the preseason is for.”
W-P is now 3-1 and hosts Tekoa-Oakesdale-Rosalia for a Southeast 2B League twin bill at 11 a.m. Saturday in Prescott.
W-M is now 1-2 and heads to the Riverside Tournament Monday at 10 a.m. against a team to be determined.
