TOUCHET — DeSales’ seventh-inning rally fell short here Tuesday afternoon as Touchet held on for a 6-4 non-league prep softball victory.
It was the Irish’s first outing of the season while Touchet evened its season record at 1-1. The Indians opened their season Tuesday with a 4-2 loss to Dayton.
“For this early in the season, it was a good outing for both teams,” Touchet coach Gary Dorman said. “We both got to see some things we need to work on. There were not a lot of walks, which is always a good thing this early in the season. And a lot of kids got to play.”
Irish coach Russ Vera was somewhat in agreement.
“Basically I played everybody on the team to try and get a look at them,” he said. “But we committed too many errors and didn’t get enough hits.”
The Indians scored three times in the bottom of the sixth inning to pad their lead to 6-2. Alexi Sturm led off the inning with a triple and scored on a bunt single by Melissa Creek. An Irish error allowed the second run to score, and the third came home on a wild pitch.
Then, in the top of the seventh, DeSales made some noise.
Allesyn Lyons got things started with a single, and a walk and an error loaded the bases. Brittney Postlewait’s base hit, her second of the game, drove home two runs with just one out. But Touchet pitcher Makayla Bishop retired the next DeSales batter on a comebacker and then registered a game-ending strikeout.
DeSales opens Southeast 2B play Saturday in Pasco when the Irish take on Tri-Cities Prep in an 11 a.m. doubleheader. Touchet, meanwhile, entertains five-time defending Class 1B state champion Colton Saturday in an 11 a.m. twin bill to begin the Southeast 1B District season.
“We split with them last year during the season, and our games have always been close,” Dorman said of his team’s recent history against the reigning champions. “But we are very young this year with three freshmen in our starting lineup and younger kids filling other key roles. And we have a young pitching staff.
“Kids are going to have to step up and step in with some positive things for us to be successful this year. So far they have.”
