HONOLULU, Hawaii — After playing eight matches in 12 days, Whitman College failed to win a match against No. 5 Hawaii Pacific University, an NCAA Division II powerhouse, in a 9-0 loss.
At No. 1 doubles, Petr Michnev and Gerald Moretti jumped out to an early double-break lead against Whitman’s, Colton Malesovas and Andrew La Cava.
La Cava and Malesovas broke back once to get back within 5-4, but surrendered the final three games and fell 8-4.
At No. 2, the new combo of Steven Roston and Andy Riggs held their first four service games, but never sunk their teeth into the Sharks’ serves and eventually fell 8-4 to Adriano Locorotondo and Yann Renault.
At No. 3, seniors Matt Tesmond and Sam Sadeghi were broken in their first service game before eventually losing 8-3 to Max Hertl and Juame Martinez Vich.
Leading 3-0 after doubles, it was clear the Sharks were going to avenge their 2012 loss to Whitman.
With La Cava nursing a sore back, freshman Alex Noyes saw his first significant action of the trip, but ended up on the wrong end of a 6-1, 6-0 defeat at the hands of Renault.
Martinez Vich put the match out of reach by beating Malesovas 6-2, 6-0 at the top spot. Sadeghi didn’t fare much better at No. 3, losing to Hertl 6-2, 6-2. At No. 5, Hawaii Pacific’s Clemens Graute served his way to a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Whitman junior Will Huskey.
With the loss, No. 13 Whitman concluded a 4-5 Spring Break with three wins over nationally ranked teams.
Whitman is now 10-6 on the season and 7-0 in the Northwest Conference. Its next match is against Whitworth on April 5th in Spokane.
