POMEROY — Pomeroy High School notched a 18-17 softball victory in game two of a double header against Liberty-Spangle and fell 16-14 in game one.

The victory was the first win for the program in three years and the first for new coach Jessica Nelson as well.

“The seniors that we have now just won their first game of their high school careers,” Nelson said. “So that was what most cool about that game. We played really well in game one too, only lost by two.”

In game two Pomeroy needed a two-run bottom-of-the-seventh rally to win.

Annikah Suroff walked to lead off and Toni Cloud singled her to second base. Suroff stole third and was knocked into score by Zoe Kerne on the fielder’s choice. Cloud also moved to second base on the fielder’s choice out at first base. Harley Dinner walked and Shandelle Coleman hit in Cloud from second base with a single to win.

The Pirates (1-3) open Southeast 1B play Saturday, hosting Liberty-Christian.
