ATHENA — Union High School took advantage of two Weston-McEwen High School errors in the top of the seventh to score three times and pull out a 9-4 win in the opener of a non-conference softball doubleheader here Friday night.
The TigerScots bounced back with a three-run fourth to break a 3-3 tie in the second game and went on to earn a split with a 7-5 win.
“We wanted to stay competitive with them,” W-M coach Jeff Griggs said. “We didn’t play good enough defense in the first game (five errors) and just piled on the errors.”
The TigerScots trailed 6-1 after five in the opener but rallied in the home sixth. Keegan Shephard drove in a run with a double, Isabelle Dillow and Jessica Pease knocked in runs with singles and the TigerScots were back in it trailing 6-4 heading to what proved to be the disastrous seventh.
W-M dug itself another 3-0 deficit in the second game, but scored three in the third to tie. Taylor Entze drove in a run with a two-out single in the W-M fourth, and Molly von Borstel, who had three hits in the game, followed with a two-run single as W-M took a 6-3 lead.
Entze, in the cirle for the TigerScots, made the lead stand up as W-M took a 7-5 win. Entze pitched a complete game, scattered six hits, and struck out eight.
The TigerScots, 4-1, head to the Riverside tourney Monday and open tournament play against Napa at 12:30 p.m.
