WALLA WALLA — Comments are being sought on the next phase of the environmental cleanup of the Stubblefield Salvage and Recycling site on Myra Road.

In a release, Jeffrey Fowlow, Environmental Protection Agency on-scene coordinator, said the cleanup work is expected to start in late spring or early summer after any comments on an engineering evaluation and cost analysis have been addressed.

Comments will be taken until April 5.

The site is the location of a former metal salvage business that ceased operation in 2010. Inspections by the state Department of Ecology showed significant contamination in soil at the site and the presence of asbestos and other wastes.

The state referred the site to the EPA for further sampling and cleanup. The first cleanups were done in October 2009 and last April, when workers removed contaminated soil, abandoned waste drums, batteries and other hazardous materials.

The next phase will involve removal of contaminated soil at and below the surface. Workers in protective gear will be at the site and there will be increased truck traffic and heavy equipment in operation.

An engineering evaluation and cost analysis of the cleanup project, along with other documents, are available online and at the Walla Walla Public Library, 238 E. Alder St., in Walla Walla.

"The site is the location of a former metal salvage business that ceased operation in 2010." Does this mean that Stubblefield Salvage and Recycling is no longer in business, or does it mean that they no longer operate the site on Myra Road?
