WALLA WALLA — A wasted pitching performance in the first game preceded a shellacking in the second as Walla Walla dropped both ends of an NWAACC baseball doubleheader Suunday at the Warriors’ Tausick Way field.
Lower Columbia prevailed 1-0 in the opener and romped to a 13-4 victory in the nightcap.
The double dip dropped the Warriors’ season record to 8-8 heading into Wednesday’s Eastern Region-opening doubleheader at Wenatchee. It will also mark Walla Walla’s first road games of the season.
WWCC’s Jake Campeau pitched the first seven innings of Sunday’s first game. He scattered 12 hits, struck out 10 and didn’t walk a batter.
“Jake pitched a great game,” WWCC coach Dave Meliah said. “He worked through some jams and gave us a chance to win.”
Al Carkner and Michael Schmidt each pitched a scoreless inning in relief for WWCC. But a fourth-inning RBI triple by Lower Columbia’s Cody Sullivan, which was preceded by Mason Dunning’s second single of the game, was all the support Red Devils pitchers Nick Lemoncelli and Easton Napiontek would need.
Lemoncelli pitched eight strong innings, allowing just two Warriors hits, striking out 15 and walking three. Napiontek worked the ninth and held the Warriors at bay even though he yielded two more WWCC hits in the inning.
Derrick Salberg, Mason Dunning and Tyler Rome had two hits each for LCC in the first game. Ryan Neal doubled and Seth Wolfe, Corey Morris and Kevin Toon added singles for the Warriors’ four hits.
The Warriors matched the Red Devils run-for-run over the first five innings of the second game. But the visitors broke a 4-4 tie with a single run in the top of the sixth inning and then erupted for eight runs in the seventh.
Lower Columbia hammered three home runs in the game and abused six WWCC pitchers for 20 hits total in the rout. Zach Siesk homered, singled and drove in three Red Devils runs; Koen Nooji had a home run and a double and a pair of RBIs; Connor Huesers had a home run, two singles and two RBIs; and Bret Britow had four hits in the game, including a pair of doubles, and drove in two runs.
Jarod Gonzales smacked a home run and added a single to pace WWCC’s six-hit attack. Ryan Rambur also slugged a solo home run.
