MILTON-FREEWATER — McLoughlin High School’s baseball team steamrolled the Union Bobcats 13-1 in five innings, and beat them 5-2 in the nightcap here Monday.
The Pioneer pitching held the Bobcats to one run on one hit in the first game, while Mac-Hi batters connected for eight hits.
“In that first game, our pitchers did a great job,” Mac-Hi coach Mike Garcia said. “I was real happy with what they were able to do. The focus level was right where we like it to be. The second game, we weren’t quite as focused and that made it closer.
“We didn’t hit the ball as well in game two and they (Union) played better, too,” he said. “Their pitchers hit their spots and the Bobcats fielded better. We did execute on the opportunities we had and scored the base runners that we got.”
Mac-Hi got contributions up and down the lineup in the opener, with seven guys getting at least one base hit and six batters getting RBIs.
The Pioneers shot out of the gate with five runs in the bottom of the first inning. Jose Aguilar walked, Dylan Shuler reached on an error and that moved Aguilar to third.
Derek Richwine hit a sacrifice fly to score the first run. Shuler stole second base and moved to third on the Richwine fly ball.
Chase Copenhaver walked and Saul Ortiz knocked Shuler in with another sacrifice fly to make it 2-0. Copenhaver then stole second.
Jordan Leinbach was beaned, and Tavis Hodgen and Hunter Yensen had RBI singles.
Hodgen moved to third on the Yensen single and Yensen was caught off first by the Union pitcher, Kaleb Poor.
Yensen got in a rundown and Hodgen was able to score when the ball was thrown away.
In the second inning, the first four Pioneer batters singled to score three runs, as Aguilar, Shuler, Richwine and Copenhaver all had hits.
Ortiz struck out and Leinbach popped out before Hodgen reached on a fielding error.
A double steal of Copenhaver on third and Hodgen on first plated the final run as the Bobcats were unable to throw either runner out.
The score was 9-0 and Mac-Hi made it 13-0 in the third inning.
Three straight Bobcat errors loaded the bases for Mac-Hi, and Ortiz forced in a run with a walk. Leinbach had an RBI groundout and Hodgen had an infield single RBI.
Hodgen then stole second and scored on the melee on a throwing error on the Bobcat third basemen, Jayden Moore, on Eduardo Zaragosa’s hit.
Union scratched out a run in the fourth inning to finish the scoring. Moore walked, Poor reached on an error and Brax Anderson was hit by a pitch before Dalton Opie hit an RBI groundout.
Shuler started on the mound for the Pioneers in the nightcap, and got some immediate help as Mac-Hi plated three first-inning runs.
Aguilar doubled, Shuler walked and Richwine singled to score Aguilar.
Copenhaver hit a pop fly that was dropped by Union’s first basemen in short-right field. Shuler scored as Union got the force out at second to make it 3-0, Leinbach walked and the Pioneers’ fourth run was plated on a groundout by Ortiz.
The Bobcats scored a single run in the third inning.
In the bottom of the third, Mac-Hi added two more runs. Richwine walked, stole second, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on another errant pitch past the catcher.
Copenhaver walked and used the two wild pitches to reach third before Hodgen hit an RBI sacrifice fly to make it 5-1.
The Bobcats finished off the scoring with a single run in the fourth.
“I give them (Union) more credit for how they played in game two,” Garcia said. “They didn’t make many errors and they played better. We didn’t play quite as well.”
