W-M sets up title game rematch

IRRIGON — Weston-McEwen High School earned a rematch of last season’s Class 2A state championship baseball game with a pair of dominating victories in the Irrigon/Riverside Spring Break Bash tournament Monday.

The TigerScots (3-2) defeated Class 3A Riverside, 17-2, and Elgin, 16-5, in round robin play to earn a ticket to the tournament title game, where they face Kennedy (from Mt. Angel, Ore.). Kennedy defeated Weston-McEwen, 10-4, in the state championship game last season.

The teams faced off today at 10 a.m.

In Weston-McEwen’s victory over Riverside the TigerScots pounced early, scoring 11 runs in the first three innings while picking up 15 hits en route a mercy-rule shortened, five-inning game.

Justin Burke had three RBI and Nick Pease two. Jerad Croswell went 4-for-4 at the plate, scoring three runs and batting one more in.

In the second game, a 16-5 victory over Irrigon, Weston-McEwen opened with nine runs in the first two innings and cruised to a five-inning win after adding five more runs in the bottom of the fourth.

W-M picked up six hits in the win, but benefitted from 12 walks on the day.

“Overall our pitchers did a great job of throwing strikes and staying ahead of the batters,” Weston-McEwen coach T.J. Haguewood said. “Both teams we played are pretty young, but we still had to execute and we did a good job.”
