W-M exacts some revenge on Kennedy

ATHENA — In a rematch of last year’s Oregon Class 2A state championship game, Weston-McEwen earned a measure of revenge by defeating Kennedy 5-3 here Tuesday afternoon in a non-league prep baseball game.

When the two teams met for the state title last spring at Volcano Stadium in Salem, Kennedy came away with a 10-4 victory.

The TigerScots had “four or five” returning starters from last year’s state runner-up team in their lineup Tuesday, according to W-M coach T.J. Haguewood, and Kennedy had “five, maybe six returning starters.”

Justin Burke overcame a shaky start to pitch a complete-game victory for the TigerScots. He threw 42 pitches and yielded four hits and a pair of runs in the first inning, then steadied himself.

“I don’t think he allowed another hit,” Haguewood said of Burke’s final six innings of work. “And he finished with around 98 pitches, maybe 101.”

Burke finished with six strikeouts and three walks.

Weston-McEwen managed just four hits in the game but made them count as they scored one run in the first inning, another in the fourth and three in the fifth. Seven walks issued by two Kennedy pitchers aided the TigerScots’ cause.

Lance Thacker had a pair of singles for the TigerScots and Calvin Thacker and Nick Pease each doubled and drove in a run. KJ White and Cedric Hall were also credited with runs batted in.

The TigerScots improved to 4-2 on the season. They won’t play again until April 4 when they entertain Joseph in a non-league single game.
