KENNEWICK — Some younger Walla Walla High School golfers got a crack at the Canyon Lakes Golf Course here Wednesday, and had a lesson in putting.
“They feel like they hit the ball well, but at Canyon Lakes it all comes down to putting,” Blue Devil coach Jim Smith said. “The course can really beat you up, but our kids all really loved the golf course. All they have to do is look at their scorecard to see where they missed. Three-putts hurt, and that can happen to you over there if you get on the wrong side of the hole.”
Nick Atwood led the Wa-Hi contingent on the par-72 course with a 78. Dean Atkinson turned in an 80, Konor Clark 90, and Troy Aguilar and Tyler Morrison both carded 91s.
One of the 91s was thrown out for team scoring.
Richland’s Drew McCullough impressed the field to medal with a 9-under-par 63.
“He was absolutely on fire,” Smith said.
The invite had 14 complete teams, with a team-par of 288.
Richland won the team score with a 279. Wa-Hi placed sixth out of 14 teams with a 339.
“We played pretty well,” Smith said. “We took a couple young kids who hadn’t played much, and they played the best they’ve played all year. Overall, I’m pretty pleased.”
The Blue Devils head to the Wildhorse Invite on Monday.
