RICHLAND — DeSales High School’s Ryan Baumgart and Liberty Christian’s Jared Hoey both golfed to even-par and tied for medalist at a District 9 West Schools match at Columbia Point Golf Course Thursday.
“Birdies were pretty rare,” DeSales coach Lon Olson said. “Ryan (Baumgart) had one, Jerod (Konen) had one, the fella (Hoey) that tied Ryan had two birdies, but two bogeys too.”
Of the two schools that brought enough boys to form a five-boy team, Liberty Christian and DeSales, DeSales took an overwhelming 168-to-274 victory.
DeSales’ Jerod Konen finished third with a two-over 39 and Lucas Lyons finished fourth in 42 strokes.
Waitsburg-Prescott’ Dakota Baker tied DeSales’ Bryce Scott for fifth place with a 43. Walla Walla Valley Academy’s Dylan Trapani finished seventh with a 45. Scott Kimball and Dan Schaefer each tied for eigth with 47s.
WWVA’s Cameron Fitzgerald finished with a 51 and Paul Trapani with a 52.
“We’re pretty excited — happy with how it went,” WWVA coach Kris Loewen said. “Everyone improved from our first match. We feel good, it went pretty well and we’re looking forward to our next one.”
On the girls side DeSales’ top three scored 155, while Tri-Cities Prep’s top three combined for a 177.
DeSales’ Ashton Montgomery shot a 46, Emily Baumgart carded 47 from the men’s tees, and junior Elizabeth Ruthven hit a 62.
“She’s coming on like gangbusters,” Olson said of Ruthven. “That’s still double bogey golf, but for a first-time golfer she’s doing great.”
The Irish golf again Monday at the Wildhorse Invite in Pendleton, their first 18-hole event of the year. The invite begins with a shotgun start at noon.
“We’ll find out what we’re made of on Monday,” Olson said. “It’ll be a lot of fun.”
