Japan defense report warns of continued intrusions by China

TOKYO — An annual defense institute report touches on the possibility that China will continue its intrusions into Japanese territorial waters and airspace around the Senkaku Islands and warns that this could lead to an unexpected contingency.

In its East Asian Strategic Review 2013, the National Institute for Defense Studies said China is trying to break Japan’s effective rule of the Senkakusin Okinawa Prefecture through repeated intrusions into the territorial waters around the islands.

The paper concludes that the Chinese media’s active reporting on the Chinese Navy’s military exercises in the Western Pacific and Chinese warships’ passing through waters around Okinawa Prefecture reflects the country’s intention to promote the image that the government and military are firmly united under the leadership of the Communist Party in response to the Senkaku issue.
