MILTON-FREEWATER — McLoughlin High School took a split on the opening day of its Spring Break Tournament Thursday, mercy-ruling Junction City 10-0 in five innings before dropping a nine-inning heartbreaker to Yamhill-Carlton in the second game, 7-3.
Colette Robert, Mac-Hi’s ace pitcher and a power batter, sat out the second game after taking a hard tag to the face in the first game and showing signs of a concussion.
“They (the Pioneers) stepped up and showed a lot of character when one of our best players went down,” Mac-Hi coach Nicole Christian said. “It was a good game in game two. We put a lot of pressure on them and it was a good to see them battle one girl down.
“(Yamhill-Carlton is) going to be in the playoffs,” Christian said, “so it might good to remember this one going into the playoffs down the road.”
Robert, who pitched a complete no-hitter in the first game and added two hits, suffered the injury while sliding feet-first toward third. She was diagnosed with a mild concussion and will play in Mac-Hi’s games today provided she exhibits no more symptoms.
Mac-Hi held a 2-0 lead in the second game until Yamhill-Carlton scored a run in the fifth and two more runs in the sixth. The Pioneers tied the game in the bottom of the sixth on a Brianna Crewse RBI single and the game went to extra innings.
Yamhill-Carlton scored four runs in the away ninth keyed by an error on a bunt to hand Mac-Hi its third loss of the season.
The Pioneers (7-3) play two more tournament games today against Stayton (noon) and Scappoose (2 p.m.) before opening Greater Oregon League play Tuesday at La Grande.
“These games are just preseason,” Christian said. “We start league Tuesday so that’s what really matters.”
