Pirates fall to Patriots in twin bill

POMEROY — Pomeroy High School dropped both games of a Southeast 1B baseball doubleheader to Liberty Christian Saturday, 12-1 and 13-0.

But those scores were slightly misleading, Pomeroy coach Dave Boyer said.

The Pirates held a 1-0 lead in the first game going into the top of the sixth, but the Patriots scored three runs in that inning and tallied nine more in the seventh to make the final score a lopsided one.

In the nightcap Liberty Christian scored runs in the first, third and fourth innings to take a 5-0 lead into the sixth when it added on eight more runs.

“You just look at the scores and it looked like we got thumped on really bad,” Boyer said. “But it really wasn’t as bad as what the scores look like.”

Freshman Havin Heytvelt pitched six innings of the first game and left with 10 strikeouts to one walk. He gave up three hits and one earned run.

“We took him out because his pitch count was in the 90s and he is a freshman,” Boyer said. “We figured he had gone as long as he could.”

Heytvelt is just one of four young Pirate pitchers. Adam Herres, who closed out both games, is a freshman, and Scotty Slaybaugh and Cade Gingerich, the game two starter, are both eighth-graders.

“I wasn’t happy about losing, but I was sure happy with how most of our pitchers pitched today because some young kids played pretty darn hard against a good team,” Boyer said.

The Pirates (1-5) visit Grangeville (of Grangeville, Idaho) Tuesday for a doubleheader at 1 p.m.
