Evelyn Jeannette Dolling
November 4, 1925 – April 28, 2013
Evelyn Jeannette Dolling of Lowden, Washington, passed away April
28, 2013, at the age of 87. She was born November 4, 1925, in Spokane,
Washington to James Luthwood of Lonmay, Scotland and Clara Winchester
Luthwood of Montana. Her father, James, became a cowboy at
age 24 in Montana on the new steam tractors and later married Clara
Belle and moved to Spokane as a strike breaker at Northern Pacific
Railroad. He stayed there and kept his specialty of dealing with steam
engines until he retired.
Evelyn went to school in Spokane. She worked at the Air Force Base
at Galena, working on the B17 and B24 bombers returning for repair
during World War II. During the War she met her first husband, Frank
H. Gardner USN, and married him while he was stationed at the US
Naval Base at Farragut, Idaho. During the early years of their marriage,
she traveled down the East coast following him where his boat
was docked. She rented rooms and got jobs in each town to support
herself. The last stay was in San Diego during his tour in the Pacific
Islands. When the War ended, her husband returned to Spokane to
attend Gonzaga, studying to become an engineer. Her son, Frank H.
Gardner Jr., was born at Farragut, Idaho on the Naval Base and her
daughter, Kathleen Ann Gardner Munns, was born in Spokane.
Frank and Evelyn moved to Lowden to farm in 1950. Frank died in
1953 of a heart attack, leaving Evelyn with two small children and a
farm. Evelyn worked together with her children to run the dairy farm.
In 1956 Evelyn married William Dolling Jr. and they farmed first on
his parent’s land where they lived next to William Sr. and Amy Dolling
who had raised and adopted his daughter from his first marriage.
They later moved back to her farm in Lowden
Evelyn liked to collect antiques and crochet, making many beautiful
crocheted items. Her grandchildren remember many games of poker,
monopoly, scrabble and several others. Both William and Evelyn were
avid antique collectors and were active in the Walla Walla Historical
Auto Club, and enjoyed attending many events.
Evelyn was active in a number of organizations. She was a long time
member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Lowden Study
Club and LOWATO Card Club. She was also a charter member of the
