WALLA WALLA — The Walla Walla High School boys and girls track teams finished off their regular-season campaigns in style Thursday at Martin Field against Kennewick, Southridge and Chiawana.

The boys track team won the meet and another league title, its 10th in 14 years, defeating Kennewick 121-24 and Southridge 96-49.

“All 10 years that we’ve won league we’ve been undefeated, and it has been pretty impressive to watch these kids compete,” Wa-Hi coach Eric Hisaw said. “They come out and expect to win and really do well. In the last 14 years, the boys are now 148-5 versus league opponents as a team. It is really staggering numbers.”

The Blue Devil girls beat the Lions, 118-30, but fell to Southridge 84-66 and finished fourth in the Mid-Columbia Conference for the year.

“I’m really pleased with our senior girls,” Hisaw said. “Seniors Rachel Nelson, Ashley Cornia, Dominique Cox, Maggie Callan and Brittany Gibbar have been here for a long time. They’ve been the heart and soul of the team for awhile now. Another best time in school history in the 4x200 is a nice way to go out on the home track in the regular season.”

Stuart Gillin highlighted the boys track events by winning the 100 and 200 meters with times of 11.18 and 22.72, respectively.

Wa-Hi’s Robert Miller finished third in the 100 (11.37) and second in the 400 (52.49).

Ethan Gardner finished third (23.04) in the 200 and Andrew Miller claimed third in the 800 (2:09.41).

Paul Gilmore raced to second in the 1,600 (4:44.74).

Ben Wolpert and Sean Newcomb finished four one-hundredths of second apart in the 3,200, with Wolpert coming in at 10:07.43 and Newcomb at 10:07.47.

“We kind of finished the race together at the same time,” Newcomb said. “We didn’t worry too much about who was first or second today, just that we got the top two places for our team.”

Wa-Hi’s Rob Thonney earned fourth places in the 110 hurdles (16.75) and 300 hurdles (43.08).

The Blue Devils two boys relay teams, the 4x100 and 4x400, were first and second, respectively.

Senior Blue Devil Logan Reardon dominated the field throwing events. He got first in the shot put (48 feet, 8.5 inches), first in the discus (147-01) and second in the javelin (156-07).

“I had a pretty good throw in the discus,” Reardon said. “The shot and jav throws were pretty solid. I’m right where I want to be heading into districts next week. All of my throws are going up. Districts should go well.”

Quinn Piver managed to get third in the shot put (43-04.50) and fifth in the discus (116-09).

Garret Kenny took second in the pole vault at 12-feet, and Peter Sirmon won the long jump at 20-09.75.

Darnell Handcox took second in the long jump (20-08.25) and triple jump (40-06.50).

On the girls track side, the relay team of 4x200 set another school record (1:45.94) by almost a full second. The team consists of Allyson Gibbar, Callan, Cornia and Dominique Cox.

“We have a good chance of making it to state in the 4x200 relay if we run together as a team and really work together,” Cox said. “Our team of 4x400 made it to state last year and could again this year.”

The 4x400 team of Brittany Gibbar, Courtney Cox, Nelson and Hannah Moeller finished first Thursday, with a time of 4:16.51.

Cornia took the 300 hurdles crown for the day at 46.63, and Catherine Feistner took the 3,200 top spot with a time of 12:26.15. She was followed by two other Wa-Hi competitors, Lea Davidson (12:44.61) and Jennifer Wall (12:56.59).

Courtney Cox took the 1,600 (5:22:96), while Nelson was first in the 800 (2:25.00) and Dominique Cox was third in both the 200 (26.73) and 400 (1:00.93).

In the girls’ field competitions, Maddie Sirmon won the javelin (123-05), and Katarina Tonhdavong took second in the discus (117-03).

Madison Doepker finished second in the shot put (35-07.00) and third in the discus (101-06).

Brenna Barnett grabbed second in the pole vault (9-00.00) and Cornia excelled in the long jump and triple jump. She was third in the long jump (15-10.75) and second in the triple jump (34-05.25).

The Blue Devils will compete in districts next weekend in Richland. The top 16 go to districts in each event, and the top eight from there qualify for regionals. The top two from regionals advance to state.

“The postseason is coming right up,” Callan said. “It is my favorite time of the year and we all hope to do really well.”
