MILTON-FREEWATER — Mac-Hi claimed an undisputed Greater Oregon League softball championship here Saturday afternoon with a sweep of Baker, 7-0 and 9-7, at Yantis Park.
The Pioneers, who shared the title with the Bulldogs a season ago, improved to 10-0 in the GOL and 19-5 overall.
Colette Robert shut Baker out on three hits in the opener while Cheyenne Kessler and Brianna Crewse collected three hits apiece in game two.
Robert broke a scoreless tie in game one with a two-run double in the second inning. Megan Reed followed with a run-scoring two-bagger.
The final run of what turned out to be a four-run second inning scored on a passed ball.
Reed accounted for the Pioneers’ final three runs of the game with a three-run double in the third.
Mac-Hi trailed 6-1 after 2½ innings of the nightcap. Kessler blasted a two-run home run in the fourth inning that put the Pioneers up for keeps, 7-6.
“We haven’t swept Baker in five years,” Mac-Hi coach Nicole Christian said. “The girls were wanting to take the conference. It was nice for them to sweep Baker and take the conference on their own.”
The Pioneers close out the regular season Wednesday when it hosts GOL rival Ontario at 2 p.m. They will host an opening-round game in the Oregon Class 4A state playoffs on May 22.
