RICHLAND — The Richland Bombers shellacked Walla Walla High School Saturday in the District 5/6 soccer tournament title match, 6-1, taking the district’s first seed into the regional tournament with the Greater Spokane League.

The Blue Devils advance as the No. 2 seed and will match up in a loser-out game with Spokane’s Lewis and Clark Tuesday at 6 p.m. at the Whitman College athletic fields.

The winner of that game will play the loser of a game between the tournament’s top seeds, Richland and Ferris, Thursday with a trip to state on the line.

Wa-Hi coach Mike Washington said strong winds in Saturday’s loss didn’t help his team’s efforts.

“The strong wind in the Tri-Cities wasn’t surprising, but it wasn’t suited to our playing style,” Washington said. “We tried to change up our tactics, down 2-0, at halftime and it didn’t work well. They hit us on counter attacks and built on the lead.”

Wa-Hi’s Gerardo Gomez scored the team’s lone goal on an assist by Jose Maya.
