WALLA WALLA — Walla Walla Community College bounced back from a tough 7-0 NWAACC East Region lose to Treasure Valley in the twin bill opener to edge the Chukars, 6-5, in the nightcap at Warrior Field here Wednesday afternoon.
The split leaves WWCC at 18-8 in the East Region, 26-16 overall, and in second place with a postseason berth secured. The Warriors can still win the East title if they sweep at Spokane, and Treasure Valley gets swept by Yakima, on Saturday.
The Chukars limited WWCC to four hits in the opening shut out, with TV picking up 13 safeties off four Warrior pitchers.
In the nightcap, Jarrod Gonzales’ first-inning home run got WWCC off on the right foot as the Warriors scored three runs.
They answered a Chukar run in the fifth inning with two in the bottom of the stanza, and another in the sixth.
Treasure Valley put a rally together to score an eighth-inning run and three in the ninth, before Jake Campeau closed the Chukars out.
“Jesse Houser did a really good job of creating some tempo on the mound and keeping our defense involved,” WWCC coach Dave Meliah said of his starter in the nightcap. “He was also able to throw his breaking ball for strikes and keep their hitters off-balance.
“Jake Campeau has done a real nice job of closing games out when we have asked him to do that,” he said.
“Jarrod Gonzales’ home run in the first inning may not have landed yet,” Meliah said. “That is the furthest ball I’ve seen hit at our field in a long time.”
The Warriors finish off regular-season play with the 1 p.m. twin bill in Spokane Saturday.
“I was very proud of the way the guys bounced back after a tough first game,” Meliah said.
