Regarding the April 15 article on page 7 of the U-B.
Is Earth warming? You bet!
Has been since the last Ice Age. A few kilometers of depth of ice over Chicago are gone and the sea level has raised over 400 feet.
But, what is it doing now? About the same as the last couple of hundred years. The climate is still doing some minor oscillations at the peak of our interglacial period, too. But, can we ascribe human added CO2 as the root cause?
In 1988, John Kerry, Al Gore and James Hansen staged a great societal disservice by turning off the air conditioners and opening the windows during a hot day in the Capitol. It was a sweltering hearing on the hypothesis by Dr. Hansen that we would all soon die from human enhanced carbon dioxide in the air we breathe.
This chemist was skeptical then and remains so now due to observational evidence such as the thermodynamics of the well-behaved trace CO2 molecule and the abundant and complex air conditioner molecule H2O. As a result, I am one of over 31,000 scientists who signed the petition project. The consensus is questioned, mainly because it never really existed. The IPCC panel is 80 percent politically nominated nonscientists.
With government grants came the duplicity of the alarmists and the raping of the scientific method. This became openly evident with Climategate, then Climategate 2, Fakegate, and now Climategate 3.
In refute of the alarm has come numerous peer reviewed papers. Recently, Dr. Don Easterbrook presented such evidence to the Washington state Senate Committee on Energy, Environment and Telecommunications.
The predictive models are not able to describe current and historical climates. Most alarmist investigators “hockey sticked” the Roman and Medieval warming and the Little Ice Age. The last 15 years of data show an unpredicted flattening, if not outright cooling period, beyond the outer bounds of model uncertainties and continuing.
As a defense lawyer once said, “If it doesn’t fit, you must acquit!” So goes true scientific method of hypothesis and reproducible evidentiary proof.
