Al was born Oct. 27, 1925, to Robert and Camilla Herndon in Walla Walla. He grew up with his two brothers, Bob and Tiny, and attended school in the Milton-Freewater area. After graduation he and lifelong friend Don Coe joined the Navy together and fought for their country in World War II. When he returned home from the war he married Ardith Morris on Jan. 20, 1949, and they continued to live and raise three children, Bill, Kathy and Rick, in the Milton-Freewater and Walla Walla areas. Al worked many years as a farmer, where he could do what he loved, riding horse and tending cattle. Later in life he became a truck driver hauling cattle and wheat. Al said this gave him the best of both worlds: he still had the cattle to haul and he met many a great friend. After his retirement he could be seen most mornings at the Burger Hut drinking coffee and visiting friends.
Al is survived by two sons, Bill, Rick and his wife Shelley; daughter, Kathy and her husband Malcom Neil; two brother-in-laws; three sister-in-laws; three grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and a great many dear friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ardith; his parents; and two brothers.
