PASCO — Wa-Hi’s girls brought home the Mid-Columbia Conference District tennis championship after a hot tournament concluded here Saturday, behind a couple of district-title performances.
Danielle Thongdy earned the district singles title by running the tourney table, and the Blue Devil team of Allison Mehn and Rachel Schueller won the doubles championship.
“This was an amazing weekend for the girls,” Wa-Hi coach Keven Peck said. “I was really proud of how they handled the extreme heat and managed
themselves throughout the tournament to produce some incredible individual performances and a team district championship.”
Thongdy opened tourney play with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Chiawana’s Kelsey Toyada, and then handled Pasco’s Tatum Buckenburger, 6-1, 6-1. She dispatched Wa-Hi teammate Hailey Lewis, 6-1, 6-2, to face Julie Campos of Chiawana in the district title match. Thongdy won that, 6-2, 6-3.
After a first-round bye, Mehn and Schueller teamed up to garner two straight 6-0, 6-1 match victories over teams from Pasco and Richland, before pulling out the championship, 6-1, 7-5, over another Richland duo.
Wa-Hi won with a team score of 41, followed by Richland 19, Chiawana 12 and Pasco 7.
“It’s pretty special to walk away with the singles and doubles district championship — as well as the team championship,” Peck said.
“Rachel (Schueller) and Allison (Mehn) played some solid tennis en route to winning the doubles championship,” he said. “Rachel and Allison are playing their best tennis at the right time and I am excited about their chances at regionals.
“Another player peaking at the right time is Danielle Thongdy,” Peck said. “Danielle was steady and consistent in her battle for the district singles
championship. She never gave up more than three games in a set and impressed a lot of players and coaches alike.”
Also placing for the Blue Devils were Jazmin Duran, who won three of five matches to finish fourth, and the duo of Rosa Tobin and Mari Arceo, who went 4-1 to place third.
“It’s hard to put into words how impressive our team effort was during this district tournament,” Peck said. “All girls without a bye in the first round won their first-round matches. It is very unusual to bring a whole team back for the second day of district play.”
Winning first-round matches were Catelyn Buettner and Lewis, and the team of Jaime Quaresma and Jennifer Bautista.
“Jazmin Duran in singles and Rosa Tobin and Mari Arceo in doubles all battled through the playback bracket knowing they would not be regional qualifiers. All, however, showed their competitive nature by not giving up and reaching the final for third and fourth place.
“Jazmin met (for the second time) a tough Rylee Dewitt from Richland and walked away with fourth place.
“In doubles, however, Rosa Tobin and Mari Areco played their fifth and final match against (for a second time) a tough Pasco duo of Zara Guzman and Adriana Morfin. Rosa and Mari illustrated their fitness level
and skill level by making easy work of Pasco, 6-0, 6-1.
“I am very pleased with our individual district titles,” Peck said. “But, I am even more pleased with our team title because every girl earned points towards the total victory — and as it should be with this group of girls, they all share in the success.”
The regional tournament is Saturday in Richland.
