WALLA WALLA — Walla Walla High School’s Jessica Huntsman shot a fourth-place 84 Monday in the first round of the District 5 golf championships at par-72 Veterans Memorial Golf Course, leading all Wa-Hi golfers and setting herself up with a shot at making the state cut.
The final round of districts takes place today at 2:30 p.m. at Sun Willows Golf Course in Pasco. The top five finishers there advance to state, which is to be played May 21-22 at Camas Meadows in Camas, Wash.
As she placed in the top four, she will be playing in the top grouping at Sun Willows alongside Pasco’s Nadeen Martinez, who shot an 80 Monday to win the first round.
“Jessica’s goal is she wants to go out there and be medalist,” Wa-Hi coach Mike Patterson said. “They (the top grouping) still have to play the golf course, but it’s also a possibility of a little bit of match play too.
“They’re going to have to be smart about club selection and how they’re going to attack the flagstick,” Patterson said. “I know there’s one thing I won’t have to worry about, a lack of determination with those three girls (Wa-Hi’s golfers).”
Kendall Dunovant shot an 89 for 13th and Marisa Jimenez carded 104 for 15th to round out the Wa-Hi golfers. The top 16 golfers advanced to the second round today.
“We hope that everything moves forward for today and we have the same good fortune of low scoring,” Patterson said.
Patterson said the conditions at Vets, which recently changed management, were excellent.
“It’s remarkable,” Patterson said. “We were a little nervous going into it, but the people from the city and (Walla Walla Community College) have got it in fine shape. It was just amazing — the transformation they were able to make in just a week was incredible.”
