Feb. 23, 1968 — May 12, 2013
Ron Richwine, 45, of Milton-Freewater passed away May 12, 2013, at home following a yearlong battle with esophageal cancer. A memorial service will take place Friday, May 17, 2013, at 11 a.m. at the Milton Seventh-day Adventist Church, 1244 N. Elizabeth St. Memorial contributions can be made through Munselle-Rhodes Funeral Home or directly to Danner Farms, 1900 S. Main St., Milton-Freewater, OR 97862. Danner Farms is a one-on-one mentoring program for boys in Milton-Freewater. It is a program that was close to Ron’s heart. Ron might even say a donation of time would be great as well. Private interment will be in the Milton-Freewater Cemetery.
Ron was born Feb. 23, 1968, to Neil and Barbara Bekkedahl Richwine in Walla Walla. He was raised in Milton-Freewater, attending schools there, graduating from McLoughlin High School in 1986. While growing up, he worked at the family business, Richwine’s Furniture and Hardware, as well as mowing lawns. Some of his favorite things to do as a child were riding motorcycles, camping with his family, participating in wrestling and Little League. In high school, Ron was involved in football, wrestling, track, choir and Crimson and Black.
He met the love of his life, Amy Kencheloe, as a 14 year old when he rode his motorcycle to Pleasant View School for her eighth-grade graduation party. They were a steady couple from then on and married on June 3, 1989. The births of their three children — son Derek, and daughters Sydney and Abby — were highlights in his life and he cherished his role as their father.
Following high school graduation, Ron enlisted with his best friend, Jay Rodighiero, in the U.S. Army. He served a two-year enlistment and was stationed in Aushafenburg, Germany. Later, while working as a teacher’s aide at Ferndale Elementary School, Ron decided to pursue a degree in teaching. He received his bachelor of arts in education from Eastern Oregon State University in 2001 and later earned his master’s degree. He taught third grade for eight years, was dean of students for two and associate principal up until the time of his death. Ferndale School was near and dear to Ron’s heart and his devotion to the school, staff and student’s families was evident.
Ron was a member of the First Community Church of God of Milton-Freewater and taught Sunday School there for many years. He was also a leader in the Awana program at Bethel Baptist Church. Coaching soccer and Little League gave Ron a chance to enjoy two of his favorite things: sports and working with children. Being a devoted uncle, Ron loved spending time with nieces and nephews and hosted an annual Christmas cousin sleepover.
Ron is survived by his wife, Amy; son, Derek; daughters, Sydney and Abby; his parents, Barbara and Marlin Good, Neil and Alma Richwine; brothers, Jerry, Ken (Robin) Richwine, Dan (Michelle) Richwine, Casey (Allyson) Richwine, Kevin (Lisa) Good; sisters, Chariss (Mike) Warner, Tamie (Ken) Woodard and Paula Good; as well as an uncle, Ken Bekkedahl; aunts, Deanna Zaniker, Joyce (George) Fitchett; numerous cousins and beloved nieces and nephews.
