May is National Bike Month!
On a local level, there are so many positives surrounding cycling, I feel compelled to share some of them with you. To start, the City of Walla Walla has proclaimed May bicycle safety month to help create awareness especially now that more cyclists are sharing our streets with motor vehicles. A safety conversation should, at minimum, include wearing a helmet, riding on the correct side of the street, obeying stop signals, not riding on the sidewalk and maintaining visibility. For motorists, awareness is the key factor in preventing accidents.
Walla Walla has many resources to help cyclists to get out on the road and have some fun. Valley bicycle maps are available free of charge at Allegro Cyclery, Bicycle Barn, the Downtown Visitor’s Kiosk, City Hall and more. The map highlights popular routes, many with a short description and mileage information.
There are many local ride group ride options for all ages and abilities as well. From the Wheatland Wheelers’ Ice cream social rides on the second and third Tuesdays of each month May through September to fun and festive theme rides to multiple Allegro Cyclery and Bicycle Barn shop ride options each week, there is something for everyone!
Local groups also host fundraising and awareness rides such as the Ann Weatherill Ride, Tour de Frog, and the Grand Fondo.
Finally, our local bicycle shops provide cyclists with equipment, advice, maintenance and repair, and lots of friendly and helpful information to help you keep rolling.
May this be the month you get your bike out of mothballs, tuned up, and road ready! The weather is fine and the road beckons!
