CLARKSTON — It was close, but Waitsburg-Prescott’s boys track team won’t be lighting cigars for the seventh consecutive year.

W-P qualified eight boys for state at the District 9 Class 2B track championships Thursday and Friday, but Asotin took the team title with 165 points to W-P’s 160, ending W-P’s streak of six straight boys track titles.

Asotin dominated the girls team standings, scoring 160 points to runner-up St.John-Endicott/LaCrosse-Washtucna’s 98 points.

DeSales qualified 12 athletes between its girls and boys teams and Walla Walla Valley Academy posted nine qualifying results.

The top two finishers in each event qualify for state, however WWVA will not compete in any events that have their finals on Saturday due to a school policy.

W-P’s James Thompkins dominated the sprints, winning the 100-, 200- and 400-meter dashes. WWVA’s Hannah Ehlers finished second in the girls’ 200.

W-P distance runner Seth Deal claimed second in the 1600 and 3200.

WWVA’s Brandon Bissell won the long jump and both the 100 and 300 hurdles races, with teammate Wesley Hendrickson taking second in the 300.

Because the long jump finals are held on Friday, Bissell will attend state for that event. He is the only Knight making the trip.

DeSales’ Allison Wujek took first in the 100 hurdles. She was followed by WWVA’s Hannah Ehlers and Abbie Underhill in the event.

Underhill took the crown for the 300 hurdles, followed by Irish athlete Brigit Lyons.

W-P boys qualifed the 4X400 and 4X100 relay teams for state. DeSales 4X100 placed third and will go to state in WWVA’s place. Walla Walla placed second in 4X100.

W-P’s Ben Shafer got first in the shot put (47 feet, 11.50 inches) and second in the discus.

Dayton’s Kaitlyn Andrews (116-00) got second in the girls’ javelin and Andrew Elmenhurst got first in the same event.

Wujek got second in the high jump, will move on in the long jump.

W-P’s Owen Lanning got second on the triple jump.

The state meet will be Friday at 10 a.m. in Cheney.

“I think we will be right there at the top of the boys in the teams points again at state,” W-P coach Jeff Bartlow said. “We will see. It was a good day and we can be proud of them.”
