ECHO — The Weston-McEwen TigerScots softball team took early leads of 2-0 and 3-2 but fell in seven innings to the Irrigon Knights, 12-4, Special District 5 playoffs action.
W-M started off well, plating two runs in the top of the first. Natalie Arnold singled and Taryn Coffman sacrificed her to second base. Molly vonBorstel doubled in a run.
vonBorstel moved to third base on a passed ball and scored on an infield error.
Irrigon fought back to tie the game in the second with two runs and W-M added a single run in the third.
In the top of the third, vonBorstel singled and moved to third on a Jessica Lambert single.
vonBorstel scored on another passed ball to take the 3-2 lead.
That’s Irrigon began to hit, but only one of the six runs in the Irrigon third were earned thanks to three W-M errors.
Irrion led 8-3 after three innings and outscored W-M 5-1 the final four innings.
“Along with the errors, it was just one of those days,” W-M coach Jeff Griggs said. “Irrigon only had two hits in the top five in the batting order. The rest of the nine hits were six through nine in the order.”
W-M (16-9) loses four seniors to graduation: J’Shon Thompson, Kacie Fuhrman, Holly Hill and Syndey Cave.
“I want my seniors to know that I appreciate all their efforts,” Griggs said. “They are good kids on and off the field.”
