Late rally not enough for TigerScots in loss to Irrigon, 8-7


THE DALLES — A year after playing all the way into the state championship, Weston-McEwen will find itself on the outside looking in as the state tournament begins Wednesday.

Irrigon handed the TigerScots a season-ending, 8-7 defeat in the Special District 6 tournament No. 4 vs. 5 game after W-M’s seventh-inning rally fell just short.

“It’s frustrating, and I know the boys were upset,” W-M coach T.J. Haguewood said. “Our goal as a program is to get into the playoffs; we didn’t do that, but life goes on. We’ll get into the offseason and work hard and try and get there next year.”

Trailing 8-4 entering the bottom of the seventh, W-M got back-to-back doubles from Jerad Croswell and Calvin Thacker to key a three-run rally, but it wasn’t enough to overcome a four-run hole.

“It was kind of one of those games where we kept on battling back and then we would give them a run,” Haguewood said. “You can’t keep doing that in the playoffs. We’ll get back after it in the offseason.”

W-M took an early 1-0 lead in the second on a K.J. White triple and a Justin Burke RBI single, but Irrigon answered with four runs in the next frame on a walk, a single and a triple, and two errors.

W-M scored runs in the fourth and fifth innings, and trailed just 6-4 going into the seventh. But Irrigon had two doubles and a single in the top of the inning to put the game out of reach.

W-M graduates five players: Calvin Thacker, White, Nick Pease and Michael Guerrero.

“It’s going to be hard to lose those guys, but its an opportunity for abother guy to step up,” Haguewood said. “They did a great job making the program better, That’s what you ask for from your senior.”

The TigerScots end the season at 15-11 overall and 9-6 in Blue Mountain Conference play.
