Martha Crawford Gray

Martha Crawford Gray, lifelong resident of Walla Walla, passed away peacefully on May 18, 2013, at the Washington Odd Fellows Home at the age of 95. She was born on Dec. 20, 1917, to Harold Emmons and Mary Bassett Crawford. She attended grade school and high school in Walla Walla and went on to Whitman College, where she met her husband, Daniel T. Gray. They both graduated in 1939.
Dan and Martha married in a double wedding ceremony with her sister, Julia Crawford, and brother-in-law, William “Bill” Harris, at the family home in November of 1940.
Longtime members of the Walla Walla Country Club, Martha and Dan loved to play golf. She was the 1954 women’s club champion. She enjoyed traveling with her husband, especially to Hawaii. One of her other pleasures was socializing with her longtime circle of friends.
Martha was a member of Delta Gamma Sorority, Chapter CN of PEO, and the First Presbyterian Church. She sat on the boards of Connecticut Investment Company and Tum-A-Lum Lumber Company. She was also a former board member of the Red Cross and YWCA.
Martha is survived by her three nieces, Jane Harris Baffney (Tom), Elizabeth Harris Matschukat (Hans), and Peggy Harris Willcuts (Terry); six great-nieces and nephews; her two granddaughters, Nicole Gray Daniel (Kyle) and Danielle Gray Eggers (Nick); as well as five great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her former daughter-in-law, Julie Gray Brewer (Harold). She was preceded in death by her parents; sister, Julia; husband, Dan; and son, Gary Crawford Gray.
At Martha’s request, there will be no service. Memorials may be made to the Julia Crawford Harris Music Endowment Scholarship in care of Whitman College, Walla Walla Symphony H.E.
