WALLA WALLA — The Jonathan M. Wainwright Memorial VA Medical Center will host two special events next week.
On Monday, the annual Memorial Day service will be in the campus chapel at 9 a.m. It will feature a presentation by Federico Diaz, a veteran of the Iraq war, to honor veterans who have died.
Music will be provided the Turner family. Flowers will be contributed by local veteran service organizations and guests are also welcome to bring floral tributes and leave them at the altar for distribution later.
On Tuesday, VA officials will preside over a ceremony prior to groundbreaking for the Washington state Veterans Home to be built on the Wainwright campus. At 1:30 p.m. members of the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation will perform a traditional Native American blessing of the land. Afterward will be a ribbon cutting for the new Residential Rehabilitation Unit. The new 36-bed facility will provide substance abuse treatment for veterans.
At 3:30 p.m. in Building 78 will be an update on the new state home and the progress of the new campus outpatient clinic.
