MILTON-FREEWATER — Joe Yenney, Josh Needham, Zach Leahy, and Mitch Lesmeister combined for a five-hitter here Wednesday night as the Walla Walla Griz posted a 6-1 victory over the Milton-Freewater Blazers on the McLoughlin High School diamond in the summer baseball opener for both teams.
“We had great pitching performances by everybody,” Walla Walla coach Ryan Van Dyke said. “For the first game out, we did all right.”
Yenney got the Griz on the board with a first-inning groundout that plated the initial run of the contest.
It stayed 1-0 until the third when Walla Walla’s Wyatt Taylor split the left-center field gap with an RBI double.
The Griz blew the game open with four runs in the fourth. Anders Davidson and Yenney highlighted the frame with sacrifice flies.
Milton-Freewater scored its only run in the bottom of the seventh on a bases-loaded walk issued to Jordan Leinbach.
“We’re trying to get things figured out, but it was a good outing — well played both ways,” Van Dyke said.
Blazers’ pitchers Calvin Thacker, Leinbach and Saul Ortiz were respectable. They limited Walla Walla to six hits in the game.
“The kids played well,” M-F coach Mike Garcia said. “Our pitchers did well. We didn’t hit well. We (are trying) to develop our younger kids as best we can.”
The Griz play at Richland on Saturday. Milton-Freewater’s next action is June 5 when it comes to Walla Walla for a rematch with the Griz.
