ASOTIN, Wash. — Tri-Cities Prep, Asotin, and Dayton advanced to the District 7/9 volleyball regional here in District 7 tournament play Saturday.
T-C Prep downed DeSales and Asotin upended Dayton in the opening round.
Dayton and DeSales squared off for the last remaining berth in Saturday’s cross over regional.
The Bulldogs prevailed in four sets. Dayton won the first set 25-22, only to see the Irish get even with a 25-15 win. The Bulldogs answered with 25-13 and 25-19 wins to pull out the match and end DeSales’ season.
“After losing close matches to Asotin we responded well,” Bulldog coach Shannon Turner said of the DeSales match. “We made a lot more happen on the net both blocking and hitting.”
Courtney Mings led the Bulldogs with nine kills, 10 digs, and was a perfect 10-of-10 serving. Madison Mings posted 15 kills and five blocks. Sarah Phillips had 20 digs, and Lexie Ramirez added 14. Chelsea Wooldridge made 34 assists and Bryeana Myrick contributed six kills and three blocks.
“We turned it up (as compared to our opening loss to TCP),” Irish coach Hailee Rogers said. “We did a lot of good things. Our seniors did a great job. We just couldn’t quite pull it off.”
Teresa Acock led the Irish defenders with 21 digs. Renee Roach smashed six kills. Brittany Lemons added 13 digs. Claire Conley had five blocks. Allesyn Lyons dished out 21 assists.
The Bulldogs dropped a 3-0 decision to the Panthers to open their Saturday run, 25-17, 25-19 and 25-20.
“We were scrappy and dug balls well,” Turner said. “We didn’t set up enough so we weren’t a threat on net. Asotin handled the ball better than we did.”
Sarah Phillips and sister Jenna Phillips led the Bulldog diggers as Sarah Phillips posted 16 digs and Jenna Phillips added 14. Madison Mings had six kills and five blocks. Wooldridge chipped in 12 assists.
The Irish dropped their opener to T-C Prep in straight sets, 25-13, 25-11, and 25-11.
“We came out really flat,” Rogers said. “We didn’t play together.”
Conley led the Irish with four kills and two blocks. Lyons chipped in 10 assists and nine digs. Alyssa James was 9-of-10 from the service line. Elizabeth Ruthven posted two kills and five digs.
DeSales loses seniors Roach, Brianna James, Conley, and Ruthven to graduation.
“Our seniors were the heart of the team,” Rogers said. “They were great examples to the younger players and did a great job. They will be missed.”
Dayton plays Saturday at Chiawana High School in Pasco against Davenport at 9 a.m. Five of the eight teams in the tournament will advance to the state tournament.
