CONNELL — The Waitsburg-Prescott boys soccer team steamrolled Northport High School, 16-0, in its first-round playoff match Saturday.
Ivan Figuero paced W-P with five goals in the match — including four in the first 22 minutes of play — to go along with one assist. Figuero connected on scores in the second, 12th, 19th, 22nd and 43rd minutes.
“He played well today,” W-P assistant coach Jay Potts said. “He was pretty excited. He was in the right spot a lot of time and he played well.”
W-P held an 8-0 halftime lead, as Christian Caro, Rodrigo Gonzales, Johnny Escalante and Tyler Fedderson each added a goal in the first period.
W-P was able to clear its bench for most of the second half. But that didn’t slow down the offense, as Waitsburg-Prescott matched its first-half total with eight more scores in the second half.
Paul Zamora and Fedderson scored two goals apiece in the second half, with Escalante, Figuero, Alberto Mendez and Enrique Balderas rounding out the W-P scoring.
W-P racked up a whopping 63 shots on goal during the game.
“Hopefully we get some confidence in some people,” Potts said. “Hopefully they can build off of that and they gain some confidence from this game that will carry over to the next one.”
W-P will face the winner of the Dayton-St. George match in the next round of the playoffs.
