Dr. Ralph Maddess
Nov. 26, 1947 - Oct. 13, 2013
It is with sadness we announce the sudden passing of Dr. R.J. Maddess of Vernon, British Columbia, from brain cancer. Ralph was born in Gimli, Manitoba, Canada, in 1947, but spent much of his youth growing up in the United States. Ralph resided in Walla Walla with his family from 1960 until his graduation from Walla Walla High School in 1965. He attended the University of Idaho, Sigma Nu fraternity, and received a pre-med degree there. He received his M.A. and Ph.D. in psychology from the University of Victoria, Vancouver Island, BC.
Ralph loved the outdoors and nature; he would tramp through forests with his Elkhound dogs and rescue birds, insects and animals whenever needed. He worked as a clinical, neurological psychologist for 40 years, positively touching the lives of many people. He taught classes in psychology at Okanagan College in British Columbia and loved working at Round Lake Treatment Centre. He was a visionary — ahead of his time. He was a man of heart and free spirit.
Ralph was pre-deceased by his parents, Oliver and Rose Maddess, both buried in the Walla Walla cemetery. He will be missed by his wife, Dawn and her family of Vernon, BC; his children, Matthew (Fabienne) Maddess of Boston and Heidi Maddess of Vernon, BC; his sister, Sharon (Ted) Yeadon of New Westminster, BC; his brothers, Marvin Maddess of Vernon, BC, and Dwight Maddess of Milton-Freewater; and his many friends.
