WALLA WALLA — Whitworth defeated Whitman College in three sets Wednesday night in a Northwest Conference volleyball matchup at Sherwood Athletic Center, making it three straight for the Pirates over the Missionaries this season.
The loss drops Whitman to 5-10 in conference and 7-21 overall.
The Pirates were very efficient on offense, hitting for a .242 percentage.
Their two most prolific scorers on the night, Jalana White and Kristine Kardell, had respective hitting percentages of .303 and .364. White recorded a team-high 15 kills; Kardell had 12.
Whitman was led by Jillian Davis, who had 16 kills and 11 digs, hitting for a .239 percentage. Abby Seethoff added six kills.
After the two teams were tied in the first set, 12-12, Whitworth pulled away, winning 25-17.
The second set was a much closer affair. Whitworth took a 10-8 advantage on a Nicole Leonard kill, but the Missionaries tied things up at 12-all when White committed an attack error. The Pirates edged out to a 17-15 lead on a kill by White and the Missionaries, although they stayed close, could never narrow the gap. The set ended on another kill by White, 25-21.
In the third set, Whitman took an early 6-3 lead, but then saw the Pirates go on a 9-2 run, sparked by five kills — including three straight — by Nicole Leonard. That gave the Pirates a 12-8 advantage.
The Missionaries drew to within two at 19-17 after an error by Whitworth, but the Pirates were able to hold off Whitman, keeping the margin at no fewer than two and reeling off the final two points of the set — a kill by White and a Whitman attack that went wide — to take the match 25-21.
Maddye Dinsmore had 41 assists for the Pirates in just three sets of work.
Taylor Aschenbrenner led Whitman with 28.
The Missionaries finish the regular season Saturday night when they host Linfield at 6 p.m .
