WALLA WALLA — A Waitsburg man accused of entering a woman’s home last month and attacking her is set for trial starting Jan. 27.

Stephen R. Gipson, 68, of 231 Bruce St., pleaded innocent Tuesday afternoon in Walla Walla County Superior Court to first-degree burglary and second-degree assault.

Officials said Gipson went into the residence of Norma Raymond on Warren Street in Waitsburg about 2:15 p.m. Oct. 28.

He allegedly pushed Raymond, 67, to the floor and then hit her with a wooden club in the arms, leg and back of her head.

Raymond then reportedly took the club away and hit him, causing him to leave.

When deputies arrived, Raymond was bleeding and said she had been hit several times.

She reportedly told deputies the man identified as Gipson had accused her of stealing his car and cellphone.

Gipson was located and booked into the County Jail the following day.

He had been held in lieu of $20,000 bail. But Judge John Lohrmann ordered him released Tuesday with conditions to live with his mother in Milton-Freewater pending the outcome of his case.
