Jan. 9, 1926 — Nov. 9, 2013
Longtime College Place resident Don Carl Peterson, 87, passed peacefully surrounded by his family on Saturday, Nov. 9, 2013, at Walla Walla General Hospital.
Don was born Jan. 9, 1926, in Weiser, Idaho, the seventh of 10 children born to Elmo and Lenna (Petersen) Peterson. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1943 and married Shirley Mae Starkebaum on June 22, 1947.
Don and Shirley moved to College Place, where he attended Walla Walla College and worked at the Jonathan M. Wainwright Veterans Affairs Medical Center. Don was well-known throughout the community and was a very generous man, always helping those in need.
Don was a member of the Village Seventh-day Adventist Church, where he was a deacon and enjoyed helping in the audio visual department. He was a very creative man and had many hobbies, one of which was collecting and chopping wood for their family fireplaces. He was an avid camper, gardener and collector. He enjoyed working on projects with his son and grandson. A real highlight of Don’s was to teach pool playing and having his grandson, Tyler, challenge him in a pool match.
Don is survived by his wife, Shirley; daughters, Renee of Spokane, and Sheri of Mishawaka, Ind.; sons, Stan of Castle Rock, Colo., and Steve of Walla Walla. Don has six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Wanda, Lila and Carol.
A memorial service will be held at a later date. Local arrangements have been entrusted to Mountain View-Colonial DeWitt, 1551 Dalles Military Road, Walla Walla, Washington.
