Steven M. Rice, of Milton-Freewater, passed away Oct. 31, 2013, at his home at the age of 60 years.
Marilyn Sams of Milton-Freewater, passed away on Nov. 9, 2013, at her home at the age of 57 years.
Steven Rice and Marilyn Sams were both born to Maurice and Connie (Green) Rice in Walla Walla. Steven was born first on Oct. 27, 1953, and Marilyn followed on March 14, 1956. Together as brother and sister they grew up and attended area schools in Milton-Freewater. Steven married Donna Goebel on June 13, 1980. He had numerous occupations throughout his life including magician, jeweler, powder coater, cook at the Hi Spot, gold prospector and spent quality time with his grandparents working on fruit farms as a fork lift operator. He enjoyed playing guitar in a rock-n-roll band called “Bandit” and later bought his first motorcycle, with which he traveled the country. Steven enjoyed traveling and was also a member of the Gem and Mineral Society.
Steven is survived by his wife, Donna of Milton-Freewater; daughter, Melissa Rice; brother, Greg Nixon of Milton-Freewater; sister, Debra Bradfield of Mulberry, Fla.; and his mother, Connie Nixon of Milton-Freewater. He was preceded in death by his father.
Marilyn Sams married Mike Alexander on Sept. 16, 1974, and together the couple traveled to California and Mississippi while Mike served in the United States Navy. The marriage later ended in divorce. Marilyn later married Ted Sams on Aug. 8, 1987, and later divorced in 1995. Marilyn truly enjoyed her occupation as a school bus driver, which began in 1979 and concluded in 2013 when she retired. As a child she did competitive ice skating and participated in 4-H and FFA. Marilyn had a love for animals. She enjoyed the ocean, California, Mississippi, gardening, camping, hunting, her students and most of all her family.
Marilyn is survived by her daughter, Mandy Sams of Milton-Freewater; sons, Brentin Sams and Allen Alexander of Milton-Freewater; brother, Greg Nixon of Milton-Freewater; sister, Debra Bradfield of Mulberry, Fla.; grandchildren, Brailyn Alexander, Torrence Sams and Talen Alexander; niece, Brittney Houser of Milton-Freewater; and her mother, Connie Nixon of Milton-Freewater. She was preceded in death by her father.
A memorial service for Steven and Marilyn will be held on Saturday, Nov. 16, 2013, at 10 a.m. at the Munselle-Rhodes Funeral Home Chapel in Milton-Freewater with Pastor Doug Henrichs officiating. A potluck reception will immediately follow the service at the American Legion Hall in Milton-Freewater. Those who wish may make memorial contributions in memory of Steven or Marilyn to the Walla Walla Community Hospice or the River of God Ministries in care of the funeral home.
